What is a snapshot?
Posted by Piotr Malendo on 24.10.2012 16:31

Snapshot in Oktawave cloud computing platform is part of the copy-on-write process. This functionality registers any changes made in storage on all hard drives plugged into the OCI instance.

This means that any action at the instance after snapshot is stored parallel. To return to previous state of machine, you simply remove the snapshot. Then the data will be removed, thus restoring the instance state before snapshot.

This functionality allows you to include i.a. quick recovery of data in case of disk write error, file corruption or failure of the application.

Be advised that snapshot will continue to increase the data file containing information about the disk changes. Therefore, this type of snapshot should be done for short periods of time, so as to avoid slowing down of instances and escape from costs increase for operations (in terms of occupied space).
